Text-to-911 is available throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A voice call remains the fastest and most effective way to reach 911, so remember: call if you can, text if you can’t.
Texting may be appropriate if you are deaf or hard of hearing, speaking could put you in danger, or the cellular signal is too weak for a voice call. Enter 911 as the only recipient. In your first message, provide your location—including the city or township—and briefly describe the emergency and the help needed.
• Be sure to include clear information in the initial text (location including city, type of emergency)
• Use clear language, no abbreviations, slang, or emojis
• Photos or links cannot be sent
• Group texts with 9-1-1 may not go through
• If text to 9-1-1 is not available in your area, you should be notified from your carrier
