Bystander CPR

Don't be afraid. Start CPR. Save a life.

Someone collapses right in front of you. They are in cardiac arrest. What do you do?

Surveys show that less than half of Americans would attempt to perform CPR. Most people are worried they could hurt the victim, be sued, or think someone else may come and be better trained to help.

Those feelings may be strong, we get it. However the benefits of performing CPR far outweigh the risk and can double or triple the chance of survival. So don’t wait for someone else to step up. Learn and do CPR. You might even save someone you love.

Hands-only CPR

There's only two steps to save a life.

When a person collapses in cardiac arrest, they need CPR. For a person who is unresponsive and not breathing, immediately call 9-1-1 and put the phone on speaker mode so you can talk to the dispatcher while beginning CPR.

Begin pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest. Compress the chest two inches at the rate of 100-120 per minute until help arrives.

If an AED becomes available, use the AED as soon as it arrives. AEDs are incredibly simple to operate. An AED might turn on automatically, or may have an "on" button. After the AED is turned on, the machine will instruct you how to use it.
